John Munson (originally from Lake Forest, Illinois, USA) welcomes you to an all-season fascinating, lovely, fun, and comprehensive Sound of Music film sites E-bike or van & walking adventure tour for private groups of the old town of Salzburg, Austria and the surrounding green areas within the city limits on state-of-the-art 2024 new E-bikes. See all the breathtaking film sites in Salzburg from the Sound of Music and the most beautiful 400-year-old palaces and incredible views of the high mountains around Salzburg, while riding at an easy-going, leisurely pace along the flat Salzburg valley floor on mostly separate bike paths (away from cars)! My tour is therefore not at all strenuous, but very relaxed, as we stop often to look at the various lovely sights along the way and to take photos and discuss the filming trivia and history of those film locations and to talk about how the Trapp family's real story compares with the film narrative. We cover about 15 miles/23 km over the course of the day.
My tour is also the only tour in Salzburg to visit the original Trapp Family home! We will visit more of the film locations than any other tour in Salzburg by far, including the Nonnberg Abbey, the "I am 16" gazebo and trick fountains at the Hellbrunn Palace, the pond and garden where the terrace scenes were filmed at Leopoldskron Palace, as well as the Trapp family home in the film! You will also get a great overall tour of the old town including Mirabell Gardens and all the film locations therein, plus much much more!
Bicycle riders of all levels of ability are welcome, provided you have confident and competent biking skills and have ridden a bike in the recent past. Once you get set up on the E-bikes with high quality helmets and baskets included, the tour itself lasts about 6 hours on average, depending on the bike riding rate of the group and how long we stop to eat lunch along the way. If so desired, we can take a relaxing 30-40 minute lunch break to sit and eat on park benches in a lovely Baroque garden next to several ponds at the magnificent Hellbrunn Palace or at many other picturesque nature locations next to other stunning palaces en route. You can bring your own food to eat, or purchase food "To Go" from one of the many cafes/markets that we will pass along the way in Salzburg.
Riding E-bikes is a great way to see Salzburg while getting exercise at the same time in the open fresh air, while having the ability to ride to film locations and other beautiful places on E-bikes that are simply not accessible by big bus tours. The great thing is that you can exert whatever amount of effort you wish to because of the various assist levels on the electric bikes, as long as you are pedaling (these are not self-propelled E-bikes). The E-bikes provide a very smooth ride with very easy control. In case of inclement weather when it is either too cold (below 50 degrees F.) or rainy (raining hard for much of the day) to ride, we will shift over to a combined van & walking version of my tour, using umbrellas and your own rain gear.
My Sound of Music - Trapp Family private E-bike tour costs 150 euro/person. Ages 14 and up are welcome in a private group. Please scroll up for all the other relevant information!
I also offer a private 6 - 7 hour E-bike tour of Salzburg for those who are not fans of the Sound of Music and who still wish to see all the most interesting places in the old town of Salzburg and the surrounding countryside, without me telling any information about the film or the Trapp Family Singers. We therefore ride on an extended route in the countryside compared to my Sound of Music tour, while still visiting all the rural palaces and other beautiful locations we normally go to on that tour. This E-bike tour also costs 150 euro per person and is open to ages 14 and up.
I also offer an all-season/all-day (8 hours on average) separate private van and walking tour for up to 4 guests to Hitler's Eagle's Nest and the surrounding area, which is a just a lovely 40 minutes' drive from Salzburg, customized to your wishes. This also includes visiting the actual bunker & tunnel system at the newly renovated Eagle's Nest documentation center museum there and other WW2 noteworthy areas around Obersalzberg, including Hitler's Berghof mountain retreat house site (where he spent a third of the war up until it was destroyed at the end of the war by the British RAF). For Sound of Music fans, we can also visit the Sound of Music film sites in the mountains in that area, including the opening scene hilltop (where Julie twirls around and sings) and closing scene hilltop (where the Trapp family hike up over the mountains to escape the Nazis). We can also visit the gorgeous Königssee (King Lake) in Berchtesgaden, Germany and even ride an electric boat across the lake if you like, just as was shown at the beginning of the Sound of Music!
This private tour is reasonably priced at 600 euro. This price does not include the fee for the mandatory Eagle's Nest shuttle bus (33 euro per person/round trip) from the Eagle's Nest parking lot, Eagle's Nest museum/documentation center fee (3 euro per person), the Königssee electric boat ride if you wish to go across the lake and back, or for the state park entry (9.50 euro for the whole van) to drive up a breathtaking panoramic road to the final meadow scene hilltop. Please write me below for more details. It is a historically fascinating area to see!
Additionally, I further offer an all-season/all-day (8 hours on average) private van tour for up to 4 guests to the gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage village of Hallstatt on Lake Hallstatt, as well as to the surrounding lakes and mountain region, including seeing the St. Michael's Basilica in Mondsee (built in the 1400's), where the wedding scene was filmed in the Sound of Music. We will also visit the lovely villages of St. Gilgen or St. Wolfgang on the magnificent Lake Wolfgang. We can also take the 35 minute steep train ride up to the top of the Schafberg (Sheep's mountain) from St. Wolfgang, as was shown in the Sound of Music during the journey up to the 'picnic meadow' hillside (but now in a much more modern and electric train than as shown in the film). From there you can see at least 5 huge lakes in the hills and valleys below! (This train ride is a separate cost which you would pay at the steep train ticket office). We also will go to the spectacular Lake Gosau, nestled in the high mountain peak region. This private tour costs 600 euro, which does not include any gondola or funicular fees, in case you wish to get even further up in the mountains to see even more spectacular lookout views over the lakes and mountain tops, as well as also not including any parking fees along the way. The tour is fully customizable.
When you write me a message below in the contact area or on What's App to book my tours or for more info, I always reply by the end of the Austrian day, if not within the hour. If you like, we can also do a What's App video call to discuss everything you wish to know, face to face.
